WaatoSafe: where the information comes from

WaatoSafe always keeps official information, observations and community activity apart, and shows the source and date of every item.

  • Official notices

Health alerts and product recalls from authorities such as COFEPRIS. Our team reviews them before publishing, with a link to the original notice and how long it applies.

  • Epidemiological information (dengue)

Open data from the Dirección General de Epidemiología of Mexico's Secretaría de Salud for Jalisco and the Guadalajara metro municipalities. We check it daily, show the date of the data, and say so when the source hasn't been updated. Counts from 1 to 4 are shown as a range.

  • Earthquakes and weather warnings

Earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or higher recorded by the USGS in Mexico, and rain and tropical-cyclone warnings in effect from Mexico's National Weather Service. Both are read automatically from the source; earthquakes are events that already happened, not alerts, and a rain warning doesn't confirm flooding.

  • Community activity

Aggregated by area only: an area appears only with at least 11 valid reports within 14 days and if it has at least 20,000 residents. Individual reports, counts and exact locations are never shown. Community reports aren't open to the public yet.

WaatoSafe is informational: it isn't a diagnosis or medical advice. In an emergency, call 911.

  • Recipes made by people

Recipes come from our team and from home cooks; every community recipe is reviewed by a moderator before it's published.

  • Information you can trust

We link to official sources and use public reference data. We explain our sources and what we do and don't do.

  • An independent project

Developed in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. We believe cooking at home can be easier, more mindful and more fun.

  • Always evolving

We keep building new tools and content to help you cook better every day.

What we do — and what we don't do yet
  • Community recipes are reviewed by a moderator before they're published; recipes written or edited by our own team are treated as already reviewed. Reviewed means checked against our Recipe Standards — not tested or safety-verified for allergies, diets or health conditions.
  • Whoever wrote a recipe always stays publicly credited as its author. When a contributor and Waatokok agree that Waatokok will manage and maintain a recipe, the original author keeps the byline.
  • Substitutions are reviewed by people, one direction at a time; two ingredients being similar is never enough for Waatokok to offer one for the other.
  • WaatoBrain adapts recipes only with those reviewed substitutions. It doesn't yet scale servings, adapt a recipe to different equipment or write a recipe from scratch, and Koki doesn't yet hold a free-form conversation.
  • WaatoPrice is an estimate built from public reference prices for Guadalajara (PROFECO) — not a quote and not live store prices — and it's shown only when we have enough data.
  • WaatoSafe shows official notices reviewed by our team and, automatically, DGE dengue data, USGS earthquakes and SMN warnings, always with their source. It doesn't accept community reports yet, and it doesn't cover flooding or mobility.
  • Near me uses your location only if you choose to share it, to look up nearby shops; finding restaurants that serve a specific dish isn't available yet.
  • Everything is available in English and Spanish; recipe text is translated so cooks in both languages can use the same recipes.
